What to include in your resume skills section

Choose relevant skills, organize them clearly, and connect the list to examples elsewhere in your resume.

A skills section gives a reader a quick overview of the tools and capabilities you bring. It is most useful when the list is relevant to the role and supported by examples in the rest of your resume.

Start with what you can explain or demonstrate today. A course you once took may belong under education without making the subject one of your current strengths.

Choose skills from your actual work

Review recent projects and responsibilities. Which tools did you use? What processes did you follow or improve? What kinds of communication, analysis, or coordination did the work involve?

Compare that list with the job description. Include the overlap that accurately reflects your experience. You do not need to list every application you have ever opened.

Use groups that help someone scan

If the list contains different kinds of skills, organize them into a few clear groups. For an operations role, those groups might be reporting, systems, and coordination. For a developer, they might be languages, frameworks, and tools.

Keep group names brief. A long taxonomy makes a small list harder to read. If you have only a handful of relevant skills, a single short section may be enough.

Replace ratings with useful context

Stars, progress bars, and percentages usually leave a reader guessing what the scale means. A plain tool name and an example of how you used it provide more context.

For example, “Spreadsheet reporting” can be supported by an experience bullet about maintaining a stock tracker or consolidating weekly reports. Someone reviewing the resume can then connect the listed skill to actual work.

Use the experience section to show judgment, collaboration, and communication through examples rather than relying on those labels alone.

These illustrative groups show the level of detail that tends to work well. Use your own tools and experience.

Use the employer’s wording when it is accurate

Different employers can use different names for the same skill. If a listing says “stakeholder management” and you have done that work, use the phrase rather than a private equivalent.

For skills with a common abbreviation, consider writing both forms once, such as “Search engine optimization (SEO).” This helps both a person scanning the page and software searching for either version. Our guide to an ATS-friendly resume explains how to keep this language natural.

Decide where the section goes

Placement depends on what the reader needs first. If you are early in your career or work in a technical field, a short skills section near the top can quickly show relevant tools. If you have substantial experience, it often works better after your work history, where it supports the examples above it.

Keep the format simple. A few lines of plain text are easier to read and process than icons or charts. There is no required number, but if the list runs much past a dozen items, look at whether each one still helps this application.

Language skills deserve a clear level, such as “Spanish: professional working proficiency.” Certifications usually belong in their own section when they are important to the role.

Remove claims that need too much qualification

If you would need to explain that you barely used a tool, decide whether it belongs in the main skills list. A clearly labeled project or course can provide more accurate context.

Check the list each time you tailor your resume. Keep current, relevant capabilities visible and remove details that distract from the role you want.
